ADAS - Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
Definition
Electronic systems designed to assist the driver through functions such as braking support, lane keeping, stability control, and collision warning.
ADAS has changed security driving. Modern vehicles no longer behave like older training cars. They contain sensors, cameras, radar, LiDAR, software, electronic braking logic, lane assistance, stability systems, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, post-crash systems, and driver alerts. These systems are designed to improve road safety, but they also influence tactical options.
For normal driving, ADAS can reduce collisions, support driver awareness, reduce fatigue, and improve stability. For security driving, the question is more complex. A system that prevents an ordinary collision may intervene during a tactical movement. Automatic emergency braking may apply the brakes when the driver intends to accelerate away. Lane keeping may resist deliberate positioning. Stability control may prevent maneuvers that older doctrine assumed possible. Post-crash systems may immobilize the vehicle after impact.
The security driver must therefore understand the vehicle as an operational platform. He should know what systems are fitted, how they behave, what warnings mean, how systems can be adjusted within legal and manufacturer limits, and when reliance on automation becomes dangerous. He must also know when ADAS supports the mission and when it may interfere with protective mobility.
ADAS does not make security driving easier in the sense of removing responsibility. It makes it more complex because the driver must manage human decision-making, vehicle software, road safety, tactical requirements, and legal obligations together.
