Close Protection
Definition
The professional discipline dedicated to protecting a person from intentional harm through planning, presence, and response.
Close protection is often associated with the operator positioned close to the Principal, but the discipline is broader than physical proximity. It involves planning, risk assessment, advance preparation, access control, movement control, communication, emergency response, and the ability to reduce exposure in changing environments.
Security driving belongs within close protection because the Principal’s movement creates some of the highest windows of vulnerability. Embus and debus points, hotel entrances, airport drop-off zones, building lobbies, intersections, congestion, public events, and predictable routes can expose the Principal to surveillance, harassment, ambush, or attack. The CPO cannot treat the vehicle phase as a pause in protection. It is protection in motion.
A Close Protection Officer should therefore understand the driver’s role even if he is not the dedicated driver. He should know the route concept, alternative routes, safe havens, seating arrangements, communication protocols, motorcade roles, embus/debus timing, surveillance indicators, and immediate action options. The driver and the CPO form one protective system during movement.
Close protection without security driving knowledge risks becoming fragmented. The team may protect the Principal effectively on foot but lose control during vehicle movement. Modern close protection requires CPOs who understand protective mobility and security drivers who understand close protection.
