Route Analysis
Definition
Structured evaluation of routes for threats, chokepoints, surveillance exposure, alternatives, escape options, and safe havens.
Route analysis is not the same as navigation. A navigation application may identify the shortest or fastest route, but security driving requires the safest and most suitable route for the Principal’s movement. The fastest route may pass through predictable chokepoints, construction zones, dense traffic, protest areas, uncontrolled crowds, narrow streets, tunnels, bridges, or locations where surveillance and attack are easier.
Professional route analysis views the route from the perspective of both the protection team and the hostile actor. Where does the vehicle slow down? Where can it be boxed in? Where are escape options limited? Where can attackers hide? Where could hostile surveillance observe the Principal’s routine? Which embus and debus areas expose the Principal? Where are safe havens, hospitals, police stations, and alternate roads located?
Route analysis gives the driver options before pressure begins. It supports primary, secondary, and contingency routes; route variation; timing control; safe-haven planning; communication protocols; and immediate decision-making if the environment changes. It also helps reduce predictability, one of the major factors exploited by hostile actors.
The value of route analysis is preventive. Vehicle handling may help the driver survive a crisis, but route planning can prevent the crisis from occurring. A security driver with excellent vehicle-control skills may still be trapped if the route was poorly selected. A driver who understands route analysis shapes the protective environment before the journey begins.
