Aquaplaning
Definition
Aquaplaning, also known as hydroplaning, occurs when a layer of water forms between the tires and road surface, causing a sudden loss of traction and reducing the driver's ability to steer, brake, or accelerate effectively.
Aquaplaning matters because rain is a common operational condition, not an exceptional scenario. A security driver may have a well-planned route and a capable vehicle, but if the tires lose contact with the road, control is compromised.
The risk increases with speed, standing water, worn tires, low tread depth, poor tire pressure, and road surface defects. If one side of the vehicle hits water differently from the other, the steering wheel may pull and the vehicle may become unstable.
