Contact Patch
Definition
The area of the tire that is in contact with the road surface and provides grip, braking, and steering control.
The contact patch matters because all vehicle control depends on tire-road interaction. A large, heavy, powerful, armored, or electric vehicle still relies on small areas of rubber to change speed, direction, or stability.
In security driving, the driver must understand that grip is limited. Braking, steering, and acceleration compete for the same tire capacity. Rain, snow, oil, gravel, worn tires, poor pressure, or excessive speed can reduce available grip and compromise maneuverability.
