Oversteer

Definition

A handling condition in which the rear tires lose grip before the front tires, causing the vehicle to rotate more than intended.

Oversteer matters because sudden rear instability can surprise a driver, especially during evasive steering, slippery conditions, excessive speed, abrupt throttle changes, or weight transfer. A security driver must understand what the vehicle is doing before attempting correction.

Although modern stability systems can reduce the likelihood of oversteer, they do not eliminate physics. Road surface, tire condition, vehicle load, speed, and driver input remain decisive. Some vehicles are more prone to oversteer depending on drivetrain and balance.
