Passive Safety Systems
Definition
A vehicle system designed to reduce injury after a collision occurs, such as seat belts, airbags, and crumple zones.
Passive safety systems matter because a security driver must consider the consequences of crashes, not only the prevention of crashes. Even in protective operations, accidents can occur through traffic, weather, evasive movement, or hostile action.
Passive systems can save lives, but they also have operational implications. Airbag deployment, seatbelt pretensioners, fuel cut-off, battery isolation, and post-crash immobilization can affect mobility after an impact. In a security incident, loss of mobility can be critical.
